English Translation
1. I praise the Lord, master of life, all-pervading, lord of the universe, lord of the lords of the world, ever-blissful, lord of all existence — past, present and future — master of all beings, Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Ishan.
2. Wearing a great garland of serpents around his neck, to the sound of Dama-Dama of the damaru — I salute Shambhu, the primeval Purusha (person), the eternal, the one beyond the three gunas, three-eyed.
3. Beyond all relative knowledge, sustainer of the universe, self-existent, destroyer of the bonds of existence, without beginning or end, all-pervading, of the nature of knowledge, lord of the three worlds — I salute Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, Isha.
4. The glorious Vishvanatha, mountain-lord, with unequal eyes, shining like the moon, great lord, infinite, unmanifest, of infinite glories, ocean of knowledge, primeval, supreme — I salute him.
5. The truth, auspiciousness and beauty, supremely peaceful, the primal principle for the dissolution of Brahma and others — the great, great lord, infinite, imperishable Shiva — I always bow to Shiva, lord of Shiva.
6. To the supreme Lord who is father and mother, doer of all welfare, the beautiful refuge — salutations, salutations to the couple Girija-Pati (Shiva-Parvati) — I salute you always, salutations to you.
7. The highest one worthy of praise by hymns, the supreme lord, all-pervading Vishvanatha — he is also Kesha; without beginning, middle or end, without disturbance — that praiseworthy, glorious Shambhu, unborn — I am Shiva.
Fruit of Recitation:
Whoever reads this Shivaashtaka immediately will certainly attain liberation.
People stuck in the darkness of ignorance in the ocean of existence —
By remembering the lotus feet of the husband of Shaila's daughter (Parvati), they attain liberation.
