Kali-Santarana Upanishad (Krishna Yajurveda); Chaitanya Charitamrita
The Hare Krishna Mahamantra — the Great Mantra of the Kali Yuga — consists of sixteen words in three divine names: Hare (Hari's energy, or Hara = Radha), Krishna, and Rama. According to the Kali-Santarana Upanishad, this is the supreme mantra prescribed for the current age for crossing the ocean of maya through the power of the divine names. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534) spread the practice of congregational chanting (kirtana) of this mantra across Bengal and Odisha, and ISKCON established it globally.
हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे।
हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे॥
hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare।
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare॥
O Hare (energy of Hari / Radha), O Krishna, O Rama — these sixteen words in three names are the prescribed mantra for the Kali Yuga. Standard Gaudiya Vaishnava practice: 16 rounds (1,728 repetitions) on a 108-bead mala.
