The Mahishasura Mardini Stotra — opening with 'Ayigiri Nandini' — is a 22-verse hymn to Goddess Durga in her role as the slayer of the buffalo-demon Mahishasura. Its fame rests partly on its extraordinary meter: a double-rhyming compound that cascades at full speed with onomatopoeic energy. Every verse ends with 'jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute' (Victory, victory to you, slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful matted locks, daughter of the mountain). The Mahalaya morning broadcast of this stotra on All India Radio is a beloved tradition for Bengali families worldwide.

अयि गिरिनन्दिनि नन्दितमेदिनि विश्वविनोदिनि नन्दिनुते।
गिरिवरविन्ध्यशिरोऽधिनिवासिनि विष्णुविलासिनि जिष्णुनुते।
भगवति हे शितिकण्ठकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकृते।
जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥
ayi giri-nandini nandita-medini viśva-vinodini nandi-nute।
giri-vara-vindhya-śiro'dhi-nivāsini viṣṇu-vilāsini jiṣṇu-nute।
bhagavati he śiti-kaṇṭha-kuṭumbini bhūri-kuṭumbini bhūri-kṛte।
jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute॥
O daughter of the mountains, joy of the earth, delight of the universe, praised by Nandi! Dwelling on the heights of the great Vindhya, sporting partner of Vishnu, praised by Indra! Goddess, family of the Blue-throated, mother of countless families, doer of countless deeds! Victory, victory to you, slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful matted locks, daughter of the mountain!
सुरवरवर्षिणि दुर्धरधर्षिणि दुर्मुखमर्षिणि हर्षरते।
त्रिभुवनपोषिणि शङ्करतोषिणि किल्बिषमोषिणि घोषरते।
दनुजनिरोषिणि दितिसुतरोषिणि दुर्मदशोषिणि सिन्धुसुते।
जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥
sura-vara-varṣiṇi durdhara-dharṣiṇi dur-mukha-marṣiṇi harṣa-rate।
tri-bhuvana-poṣiṇi śaṅkara-toṣiṇi kilbiṣa-moṣiṇi ghoṣa-rate।
danuja-niroṣiṇi diti-suta-roṣiṇi durmada-śoṣiṇi sindhu-sute।
jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute॥
Showering blessings on the gods, vanquishing the unconquerable, forgiving even the foul-mouthed, ever in joy! Nourisher of the three worlds, delight of Shankara, remover of all sins, lover of song! Wrathful with the danavas, angered against Diti's sons, drier-up of intoxication, daughter of the ocean! Victory, victory, slayer of Mahishasura!
अयि जगदम्ब मदम्ब कदम्बवनप्रियवासिनि हासरते।
शिखरि शिरोमणि तुङ्गहिमालय शृङ्गनिजालयमध्यगते।
मधुमधुरे मधुकैटभगञ्जिनि कैटभभञ्जिनि रासरते।
जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते॥
ayi jagad-amba madamba kadamba-vana-priya-vāsini hāsa-rate।
śikhari śiromaṇi tuṅga-himālaya śṛṅga-nijālaya-madhya-gate।
madhu-madhure madhu-kaiṭabha-gañjini kaiṭabha-bhañjini rāsa-rate।
jaya jaya he mahiṣāsura-mardini ramya-kapardini śaila-sute॥
O Mother of the world, my mother, dwelling in the kadamba grove, smiling! Crest-jewel of mountains, in the heart of the Himalayan peaks! Sweet as honey, slayer of Madhu and Kaitabha, lover of dance! Victory, victory, slayer of Mahishasura!
