सरस्वती वन्दना (या कुन्देन्दु तुषारहार)
Devi · Saraswati · stotra · 2 verses
Traditional; Saraswati Stotram — popular as school invocation
The Saraswati Vandana — opening with 'Yā kundendu tuṣāra-hāra-dhavalā' — is the most universally recited invocation of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, speech, and music. The first verse describes her with a cascade of white images: jasmine flowers, the moon, snow, a pearl necklace — all conveying the luminous clarity of pure knowledge. It is recited at the beginning of classes, examinations, concerts, and cultural events throughout India, and forms the opening prayer at almost every school in the Hindi and Marathi belts.
yā kundendu-tuṣāra-hāra-dhavalā yā śubhra-vastrāvṛtā yā vīṇā-varadaṇḍa-maṇḍita-karā yā śveta-padmāsanā।
yā brahmācyuta-śaṅkara-prabhṛtibhir-devaiḥ sadā vanditā sā māṃ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśeṣa-jāḍyāpahā॥
She who is white as a jasmine flower, the moon, snow, or a pearl-necklace; clad in pure white garments; whose hand is adorned with the supreme staff of the veena; seated on a white lotus; ever revered by Brahma, Vishnu, Shankara and the gods — may that Bhagavati Saraswati, who entirely removes ignorance, protect me.
सरस्वति महाभागे विद्ये कमललोचने।
विद्यारूपे विशालाक्षि विद्यां देहि नमोऽस्तु ते॥
sarasvati mahā-bhāge vidye kamala-locane।
vidyā-rūpe viśālākṣi vidyāṃ dehi namo'stu te॥
O greatly fortunate Saraswati, O Vidya, lotus-eyed one! O form of all knowledge, large-eyed one — give me knowledge; salutations to you.
