Fullara (Phullara) is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India, located at Attahas village near Labhpur in Birbhum district of West Bengal. The presiding goddess Maa Fullara / Phullara is believed to reside at the spot where Sati's lower lip (adhara) fell after Lord Vishnu severed her body with his Sudarshana Chakra. The name "Fullara" or "Phullara" is interpreted as "she who blossoms" or "the full-blossomed one" — connecting to the lips as the locus of speech, song, and devotional expression. Birbhum district is one of the heartlands of Shakta and Tantric worship in Bengal, home to multiple Shakti Peethas and important goddess temples (Tarapith is also in Birbhum).
Mythology
Per the Shakti Peeth tradition: after Sati's self-immolation at Daksha's yajna and Shiva's grief-mad Tandava dance carrying her corpse, Lord Vishnu severed Sati's body with his Sudarshana Chakra to end Shiva's anguish. The pieces fell at different locations across the subcontinent, creating the 51 Shakti Peethas. At Attahas (Labhpur), Sati's lower lip (adhara) fell — hence the goddess presiding here is called Maa Fullara (the full-blossomed/blooming one), and the place is associated with the power of sacred speech, mantra, and devotional sound. The Bhairava at this Peeth is Vishvesh (Vishveshwar — "Lord of the Universe"), a form of Shiva who guards and resides with the goddess.
