It is the most prominent center of Vaishnavism in Manipur and the largest Hindu temple in the state. It was originally built in 1846 by Maharaja Nara Singh and is adjacent to the historical Kangla Palace.
Mythology
The main idol of Govindajee (Krishna) was carved from a jackfruit tree based on a vision received by the famous Manipuri King Bhagyachandra, who played a major role in popularizing Vaishnavism in the region.
