Timings approximate; verify locally before visiting. Temple is active with daily puja.
Kankalitala is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India, located on the banks of the Kopai (Kuye) River near Bolpur in Birbhum district, West Bengal. The presiding goddess Maa Devagarbha ("Womb of the Divine") resides at the spot where Sati's hip bone (kankala) is believed to have fallen. The temple's name "Kankalitala" literally means "at the place of the skeleton" — a direct and vivid reference to the Shakti Peeth mythology. Birbhum's Kankalitala is one of multiple Shakti Peethas clustered in the Birbhum district, making this region a significant pilgrimage corridor for devotees undertaking the 51 Shakti Peeths yatra.
Mythology
Per the Shakti Peeth tradition: Sati's hip bone (kankala) fell at this spot on the Kopai River, making the site a locus of the goddess's physical presence (the literal bones of the divine body). The goddess presiding here is called Devagarbha — "Womb of the Divine" — suggesting a creative and fertile aspect of the goddess, the source of all life. The Bhairava at this Peeth is Ruru — one of the forms of Shiva as the male guardian and consort-protector of the goddess at this site. The name "Kankali" (feminine of kankala = skeleton) gives the temple its distinctive character — the goddess as the bones of creation, the structural foundation of the world.
