Kollur is considered one of the seven Mukti Stalas created by Parashurama. Goddess Mookambika is an incorporation of both Shiva and Shakti, and she is revered as the Goddess of learning and arts (Saraswati). It is highly auspicious to perform Vidyarambham (initiation of education for children) here.
Mythology
The demon Kamasura performed severe penance. Fearing he would ask for the boon of immortality, Goddess Saraswati made him dumb (Mooka). He then became known as Mookasura and harassed the sages. Goddess Parvati appeared, killed Mookasura, and stayed at this place. Adi Shankaracharya had a vision of the Goddess here and installed the Sri Chakra and the idol of Mookambika.
