महालक्ष्मी मंदिर, मुंबई
One of the most famous temples in Mumbai, dedicated to Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth. It is a key landmark and holds great historical significance in the development of modern Mumbai, particularly the linking of its islands.
Mythology
During the British era, attempts to build the Hornby Vellard (a causeway to unite all seven islands of Bombay) repeatedly failed due to the stormy sea. The chief engineer, Ramji Shivji Prabhu, dreamt of Goddess Mahalaxmi, who instructed him to search the seabed near Worli. Three idols of Goddesses Mahalaxmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati were recovered. Upon building a shrine for them, the causeway was successfully completed without further sea breaches.
