श्री मेहंदीपुर बालाजी मंदिर
Mehandipur Balaji occupies a unique niche in Indian religious geography: 1. **Premier exorcism site**: Considered the most powerful site in India for treating affliction by malevolent spirits 2. **Trinity worship**: Balaji + Pretraj Sarkar + Bhairav Baba — distinctive trinity arrangement 3. **Rural folk tradition**: Reflects deep folk-Hindu beliefs about spirits (pretas, bhoots) that exist in popular culture across North India 4. **Pilgrim crowd**: 50,000–100,000+ pilgrims daily on Tuesdays/ Saturdays; lakhs during festivals 5. **No personal items kept**: Pilgrims who undergo cleansing typically leave behind clothing, hair, etc. as offerings Even pilgrims who do not seek exorcism visit for general Hanuman darshan; Hanuman is universally worshipped for protection from evil and overcoming obstacles.
History
**Ancient Origins:** The temple's origins are oral. Local tradition holds that the Balaji deity self-manifested (Swayambhu) on the hill at Mehandipur in ancient times. The site was discovered by sages who recognised the spiritual energy of the place. **Mahant Sri Ganeshpuriji (~1000 CE):** The first formally recorded Mahant — Sri Ganeshpuriji — is associated with the temple in approximately the 11th century CE. According to tradition, he had a vision of Balaji asking him to formalise worship at the site. Subsequent generations of his disciplic line have served as Mahants. **Establishment of Trinity Worship:** The Pretraj Sarkar and Bhairav Baba shrines were established as auxiliary sanctums; the trinity-worship structure that defines the temple today was formalised by the medieval period. **Modern Era:** The temple grew significantly in popularity in the 20th century with improved transportation infrastructure. By the 1970s–80s, it was drawing large crowds from across northern India and the diaspora. Various media reports and films (notably the Bollywood thriller "Bhool Bhulaiyaa," 2007) brought the exorcism tradition to wider public attention. **Mahant Naresh Puri:** The current Mahant Sri Naresh Puriji has continued the hereditary tradition. Pilgrim infrastructure has been significantly upgraded in the 2010s — better drinking water, cleaner toilets, improved queue management.
Mythology
**Balaji as Bal Hanuman:** The deity is **Bal Hanuman** — child Hanuman. According to the temple's tradition, Bal Hanuman in his childhood form has special authority over malevolent spirits (perhaps because his mischievous, fearless childhood mood naturally subdues fearful entities). **The Pretraj Sarkar Story:** According to local tradition, Pretraj Sarkar was a great preta-king who, after attaining a deep level of spiritual development, sought Hanuman's forgiveness. Hanuman granted him a position as administrator over other pretas/spirits — making Pretraj Sarkar the deity through whom petitions from afflicted humans reach Hanuman. Petitioning Pretraj Sarkar is therefore the "intake" stage of exorcism. **The Bhairav Baba Role:** Bhairav Baba — Shiva's terrifying form — is the cosmic enforcer against malevolence. Pilgrims complete the cleansing sequence at Bhairav Baba's shrine, where Bhairav is believed to apprehend any spirits still attempting to cling to the pilgrim, expelling them finally. **The Three-Deity Sequence:** Pilgrims typically: (1) start at Balaji for blessing and intent, (2) approach Pretraj Sarkar to file the spiritual "petition," (3) finalise at Bhairav Baba for forceful expulsion. The full sequence may take several visits over multiple weeks.
