श्री मयूरेश्वर मंदिर, मोरगाँव
Morgaon is the foremost and the most important temple in the Ashtavinayak (8 Ganeshas) circuit of Maharashtra. The pilgrimage of Ashtavinayak traditionally begins and ends at this temple. The temple is the center of worship for the Ganapatya sect.
Mythology
According to the Mudgala Purana, Ganesha incarnated as Mayureshwar (one who rides a peacock) with six arms and a white complexion to kill the demon Sindhu. He was born to Shiva and Parvati in the Treta Yuga and defeated Sindhu here. Morgaon (Village of Peacocks) was so named because of its shape and the abundance of peacocks. The deity has three eyes and his trunk turns to the left. A large Nandi faces the deity, which is unusual for a Ganesha temple (usually found in Shiva temples).
