मुम्बा देवी मंदिर, मुंबई
Mumba Devi is the patron goddess (Grama Devata) of Mumbai. The city of Mumbai derives its name from her (Maha-Amba -> Mumba, Aai -> Mother = Mumbai). She is revered by the Koli fisherfolk, the original inhabitants of the seven islands.
Mythology
Legend says the goddess Mumba, an incarnation of Parvati, was worshipped by the Koli fishermen. She defeated a demon named Mumbaraka, who was terrorizing the locals. In repentance, the demon built a temple dedicated to her and asked her to take his name, becoming Mumba Devi.
