It is an ancient seat of astrology and astronomy in Assam. The name of the city Guwahati (formerly Pragjyotishpura, 'City of Eastern Astrology') is said to originate from this temple's significance. It is dedicated to the nine major celestial bodies of Hindu astronomy.
Mythology
The temple houses nine Shiva Lingas, representing the nine planetary gods (Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu). The central Linga represents the Sun (Surya).
