श्रृंगेरी शारदा पीठम
Sringeri Sharada Peetham is the first and foremost of the four Amnaya Peethams established by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. It is the southern center of Advaita Vedanta. The presiding deity is Goddess Sharada, the goddess of learning and wisdom.
Mythology
Adi Shankaracharya was searching for a place to establish his first matha. When he reached Sringeri on the banks of the Tunga River, he saw a cobra spreading its hood to provide shade to a spawning frog from the hot sun. Struck by the sanctity of the place where natural enemies existed in harmony, he decided to establish the Sharada Peetham here.
