Tarakeshwar is the most important and heavily visited Shiva temple in West Bengal. The deity is worshipped as Taraknath. Devotees believe that praying here with extreme devotion can cure severe illnesses, a practice called 'Dharna'.
Mythology
The temple was built by Raja Bharamalla after he found a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Linga in the jungles. It is said that cows would regularly discharge their milk over a particular black stone, which was later discovered to be the linga.
