Sri Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala is the most visited pilgrimage site in the world, receiving 80,000–100,000 devotees daily and over 40 million pilgrims annually — more than the Vatican, Mecca, or any other sacred site. Lord Venkateswara is revered as the Kaliyuga Daivam (the God of the current age), believed to be the most powerful form of Vishnu for the Kali Yuga. The temple is the 75th of 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples) and the world's richest religious institution with an endowment estimated at ₹3 lakh crore (~US $32 billion). Annual revenue ~₹5,258 crore (FY 2025-26); Hundi (donation box) income alone ~₹1,420 crore/year.
History
The temple's Vaikhanasa Agama worship tradition has ancient Vedic roots. Early Pallava and Chola kings made major donations. The Vijayanagara Empire (14th–16th century CE) was the most prolific patron — Krishnadevaraya donated a golden idol and sapphires. The TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) was constituted in 1932 to manage the temple and its assets. The Ananda Nilayam (sanctum dome) was first plated with copper (1350 CE) and later gold-plated — currently 12,000 tolas of gold, weighing ~12 tonnes.
Mythology
Lord Venkateswara took human form on Earth to help a sage during Kaliyuga. To fund his earthly life, he borrowed money from Kubera (God of Wealth). Devotees believe their donations to the temple's Hundi (Kubera Hundi) repay this divine loan. The Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol is believed to be alive — the deity's heartbeat can be felt when a doctor places a stethoscope on the idol's chest (per temple tradition). An ant hill covers the back of the idol, and a small window periodically opens to check it.
