Ugratara is listed among the 51 Shakti Peethas in various traditional texts, representing the site where Sati's navel (nabhi) — or in some versions, another body part — is believed to have fallen. The navel, as the centre of the body, is associated with the solar plexus and the seat of vital energy (prana); the goddess presiding here is Ugratara, a fierce (ugra) form of the goddess Tara — combining Tantric fire with the protective power of Tara (the "Saviour/Star" aspect of Shakti). The Bhairava at this site is Krurodara (the Harsh-Bellied or Fierce-Intestined one) — a name reflecting the fierce, primordial energy of this peeth.
