It is situated on the Peacock Island in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra River, making it one of the most uniquely located temples in India. It was built by the Ahom King Gadadhar Singha in 1694 CE.
Mythology
According to legend, Lord Shiva created this island for his wife Parvati's happiness (Uma is another name for Parvati, and ananda means joy). It is also believed to be the place where Lord Shiva burnt Kamadeva (the god of love) to ashes when Kamadeva interrupted his meditation.
