उनाकोटी
Unakoti is a historic Shaiva pilgrimage spot dating back to the 7th-9th centuries. The name 'Unakoti' in Bengali means 'one less than a crore' (99,99,999). It is famous for its massive bas-relief rock carvings.
Mythology
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva was going to Kashi (Varanasi) along with one crore gods and goddesses. They stopped here for the night. Shiva asked them to wake up before sunrise to resume the journey. However, in the morning, nobody except Shiva woke up. Enraged, Shiva cursed the 99,99,999 sleeping deities to turn into stone and proceeded alone to Kashi.
