वाळकेश्वर मंदिर, मुंबई
Walkeshwar Temple (also known as the Baan Ganga Temple) is one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in Mumbai, dating back to the Shilahara dynasty (1127 AD).
Mythology
According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama paused at this spot on his way from Ayodhya to Lanka in pursuit of Ravana. He was advised to worship a Shiva lingam, but his brother Lakshmana delayed bringing one from Kashi. Rama then constructed a lingam out of sand (Valuka Ishwar -> Walkeshwar). When Rama felt thirsty, he shot an arrow (Baan) into the ground, and a tributary of the Ganges (Ganga) spurted out, creating the Banganga Tank.
